Introduction
The truth is, choosing an anchor isn’t quite as simple as finding the one that tops a list. We all like the idea of an objective winner—a clear first place, second place, and third place. But anchoring doesn’t really work that way. In fact, asking “What’s the best anchor?” is a bit like asking “What’s the best vehicle?” The answer depends entirely on what you’re trying to do with it.
Are you dropping the pick for a quick lunch stop or settling in for a windy overnight stay? Do you anchor mostly in sand, mud, weed, or rocky bottoms? Are you cruising the coast, heading offshore, fishing, diving, or running a commercial vessel? The answers to these questions can dramatically change what anchor is best suited to your needs.
Then there’s the boat itself. A 4-metre runabout has very different requirements to a 15-metre cruising yacht. Bow roller space, boat weight, anchoring depth, available chain and rope, expected weather conditions, and even storage limitations all play a part in finding the right anchor. What works brilliantly on one boat might be completely impractical on another.
To make things even more interesting, anchor marketing can sometimes muddy the waters. Every manufacturer naturally wants to highlight the strengths of their design, and over time certain anchors develop reputations—some deserved, some exaggerated, and some simply outdated. It’s easy to get caught up in bold claims and lose sight of the fact that every anchor design involves compromises.
